The following are some questions that I have seen online regarding asbestos asbestos removal, and asbestos exposure. I'm going to seek to answer these questions which represent the most common questions people ask about asbestos colon
Hi I am worried about asbestos exposure. I am a 28 year old painter who has worked in the trade for 10 years. I have no reason to believe that I have had regular contact with asbestos. Just that after a saftey course i took the other day it became apparent that there "MUST" of been many times that I have been sanding and painting a surface that may of been asbestos. Cant seem to get it out of my head as I know any symptoms take up to 60 years to show. Can anyone give me any info on risks involved? I know they say that it is poss to get disease after 1 time exposure but you are more likley to develop a problem after prlonged exposure. What is considered prolonged exposure? and how many people develop a disease after prolonged exposure. Just looking for some stats so I have something to go off thank you.
ANSWER: Most of the people who have developed asbestos-related diseases that we read about actually worked in asbestos manufacturing, asbestos mines, or other types of asbestos-related careers. There's not as much information about people who simply had accidental contact to asbestos every so often as a part of their jobs. That said, a single exposure can produce disease as well as the odd fact that some people who are exposed extensively don't develop any type of disease at all.
I have been working in the asbestos surveying industry for several years and I am looking to become a freelance surveyor.
I would be grateful for some information on what I will need to do to get started.
I am not looking to take on national companies just a select few small clients.
ANSWER: the most important thing that you will need to get started is the proper licenses, insurance, an understanding of Chicago asbestos law and the law regarding asbestos removal and asbestos testing in Cook County in Illinois. This is probably the most crucial thing that you will need to get started. obviously you need to know proper testing procedures and have some good experience testing asbestos. But it sounds like you have already worked in the industry for several years so experience is not a problem.
Does anyone know if the form of asbestos call chrysotile is the same
thing as chryso used like on railroad ties and wood ect, I am looking
for any info I can on this my husband has been dignoised with
asbestosis, plureal plaques and plureal thickening. if anyone knows
please email me and thanks for helping me..
ANSWER: I believe you are referring to creosote treated wood. this is also a carcinogen although it sounds like your husband has developed asbestosis which could be unrelated to his work with creosote treated wood. I'm not a doctor however.
How much exposure can you have before it becomes physically
problematic.
ANSWER: a single exposure can cause disease.
I was exposed to asbestos only briefly when an AC system was removed
from the ceiling at our office and the ducts contained asbestos. I've
looked around online at sites like www.airborneasbestos.com to try and
dispell my worries about how much asbestos I may have enhaled, if any,
and what effect it might have on me long term.
Anyone have any information on this? Does it always take months or
years of exposure?
Thanks,
BB
ANSWER: 20 -40 years for the onset of mesothelioma (a rare lung cancer) And odds are only a little better than a lottery. Your general practitioner will want to Rx a pulmonary function test for future reference.
