Johnson and Johnson Asbestos Concerns Come to a Head
For decades Johnson and Johnson has fought against the claims of asbestos
contaminated baby powder. A nightmare for new parents, asbestos containing baby powder
could wreak havoc on the health of a growing infant. Easily inhaled baby powder creates the
perfect mode of transmission for the asbestos to infect the lung and cause disease, irritation,
and even lung cancer.
Asbestos will not only effect the baby; the mother will be harmed as well. Just last year
a group of 22 women claimed the asbestos in baby powder triggered their ovarian cancer.
Asbestos has been linked countless times to ovarian cancer, therefore the women received 4.7
billion dollars in total damages. This is not the only lawsuit that has been brought against
Johnson and Johnson concerning the health effects of possible asbestos contamination in their
baby powder. Several other cases have been brought up against J&J in 2018, including a Los
Angeles woman who alleged that her extended use of baby powder caused her mesothelioma.
She was awarded over 20 million dollars.
As more and more lawsuits compound, the Department of Justice and the Securities
Exchange commissioned subpoenas related to the multitude of lawsuits. Johnson and Johnson
continues to deny any accusations regarding the contamination of their baby powder. However,
the company does claim that it “is cooperating with these government inquiries and will be
producing documents in response.”
Johnson and Johnson has been facing lawsuits over their baby powder for decades. Now
that government subpoenas have been issued, hopefully the public will receive clarity on the
matter.
