University Child Care Center Asbestos Abatement

University of Montana Child Care Center Asbestos Abatement
Daycare can be a very stressful situation for parents. Leaving your child under the care of adults
that you barely know can be nerve wracking, and as a parent the last thing you want to do is put your
child in any kind of danger. However, this was the reality for man parents in Missoula, Montana who
used the McGill Hall daycare. An 84-page document has recently been released showing that the
University of Montana McGill Hall daycare needed to be shut down in 2011 to clear out
asbestos.
Strata, a professional services corporation, stated in the report that they had in fact
found asbestos contamination throughout the daycare facility. The specific areas were the
kitchen, office, and bathroom. The bathrooms are frequently used by the children and they
receive their food from the asbestos contaminated kitchen. The asbestos contamination was
found mostly in the vinyl flooring, mastic, floor tile, and thermal insulation. All contaminated
objects were required to be abated by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
Along with asbestos contamination found throughout the facility, lead paint was also detected.
Although lead in the paint was present, it did not reach the threshold amount required to
demand abatement. As far as we know, lead paint will continue to be used at McGill Hall
daycare.
Although the lead paint problem persists, UofM was able to remove all traces of
asbestos from the daycare. Northern Industrial Hygiene Incorporated conducted testing later
that year and showed that all of the components of the building were up to EPA standards.
